Four weeks tonight and we are off on our annual French fishing trip

After last years capers, my lad, non angler asked if we could go again, be rude not to

So exectly four weeks tonight we are off on the night drive, new rods and reels bought, bait planned and a kings ransom allocated on further purchases - can't wait

The river will be getting special attention and hope to beat the PB for carp, again

Just got back from a 48 hr social on a local day ticket.
15lb mirror, 29lb common. Good start!!!!

Non anglers dont get the fact that to fish and not catch is not a disaster
To fish in a place of your choosing and to undertake the art of angling in a manner that pleases you is enough
A fish is like a kingfisher, owl or feeding heron sighting - a pleasant addition

That matches my crowning pride and joy - a 1lb 14 oz roach out of the Thames near Goring. When I hooked it, the inertia was such I thought I’d hit a snag. There must have been anything up to a full second before either of us caught up with the state of play and then it was game on! And it’s first move was to head for the snags in the bank on my side of the river. The clever blighter actually moved towards me, creating plenty of snaggable slack and I only actually managed to land the thing because I managed to get that line back on the reel in time to play the fish back into open water. Impressed with that move on the part of a roach to this day. Beautiful animals are fish.

Correct balanced tackle, technique, patience and good fortune that the bastard does not find a snag
Let a big fish do it's thing in open water, strange as it sounds, hook a big fish and many times it can be initially unaware, I am convinced of it, particuarly when on lighter gear, steer the bugger in too quickly and it can hit a nearside snag when it wakes up to the reality
The lads fishing carp puddles in matches go the other way, hit, haul and net in a very quick action, it's netted before it kicks up
But big river barbel are different gravy in a current and with rocks and tree roots - be prepared to go in if necessary to get the angle of the rod when playing, exhilarating stuff - my best capture if not the largest (by a small margin) was on a centrepin/balsa float, with a single grain of corn, stret pegged way overr depth having waded across a rising river Wye, size 20 gilt forged barbless hook to get the bait balance right. That deinitely did not know it was hooked, when it did all hell broke loose - stunning double that and featured in the Coarse Fisherman magazine by our old mucker John Bailey back in the day who was taking pictures throughout the process

Tench and barbel are my real thing, closely followed by perch. There are some enormous perch in the Thames if you know where to fish, My mate had a day on the lock and weir permit that defies description, It was the last day of the season three years ago, and I have seen the pictures - lets just say that the twos were not retained and the threes back ups, multiple fours and bigger, utterly insane fishing, all on the drop shot lure and jigged worm

No not normal mate, a 30lb carp is a nice fish but nothing special in the scheme of things, but is for the lake I am visiting, the river holds far bigger but they are more difficult to locate, find them and you have a good chance if you know what you are doing, A 12lb barbel is always a belter as is a 6lb chub. The sturgeon are secondary and having had numerous upper 20's, a 30 is distinctly viable.
Fish of those weights would beat my species pb's, so represent the trip valhalla

Spent the afternoon on provisional tackle sorting, bait prep tomorrow and rig preperation - nothing being left to chance
Plas, that private gaffe sounds glorious, good luck and mf, yep, has the potential for both carp and barbel pb's, carp ought to happen but the barbel will be more of a challenge
Wild card is a big chub pb, had a 4.12 in a cameo hour on the maggot feeder
Targets are and in order of desire
Barbel 12lb
Chub 6lb
Carp 30lb
Sturgeon 30lb
We shall see

Between Chilham and Canterbury West there's loads of water along the railway. I'm assuming the old mid Kent waters.

Munkyfunk.. A guy called Vince leader owns the the syndicate, I'v spoke to him on the phone a couple of times but have yet to meet him.. He's a nice guy but the rules are a bit Ott in my opinion, I appreciate all fisheries have their own rules but it's a bit too finicky.

Saying that it's got it's good points, swims are well kept & regularly maintained, it's not overly busy midweek & you've got a chance of getting on the more popular swims.. it's a secure fisherie & has an otter fence all the way rd it, plus you can leave your gear to pop down the shop & know it's safe, and as you say Their's quite a few of the lovely originals in there still..

Got offered a winter but wingham came up at same time few years back.
Drive my train past it at least twice a week and looks tempting.
Some crackers in there for sure.

Munkyfunk. Can't imagine mate, every parents worst nightmare & yes it certainly would put everything into perspective.

Wingham is somewhere I'd love to fish one day but for 2-5 bags you'd need to get a session in every fortnight to justify it.. I might wait till I'm semi retired before joining the waiting list :)

I'm currently on chilham & enjoying that, had a couple of the 'A-list' fish last year so will renew this season & see if I can get lucky again. Chilhams a well run syndicate now, so much better then it was under mid Kent, but then again you'd expect that from a syndicate that charges a premium price for a ticket.

Cheers mate, was horrific I won't go into details but certainly made me put life into perspective.
Dropped wingham as couldn't warrant 2.5bags as only did one night last year and will be doing probably day tickets with my lad this year.
Got a frimley pit 4 if I do a bit by myself at some point.
Left wingham on good terms so shouldn't be an issue if I ever wanted to get back on there.

Swerving France this year again.
Only did the one night last year due to my sons serious illness.
Never thought I'd see the day I'd take him fishing again.
He's now on road to recovery and we're going to get as much in as poss this year.
Got 50k of bait in freezer, treated myself to new trakker bedchair and fortis bag. Il blank in warmth and style at least.
